Deciding on Window Treatments in Las Vegas for a Contemporary Room

May 02, 2016

When your home is decorated in contemporary style, you want your window treatments to reflect that style too. We talked to Jane Cunningham, Room Resolutions' principal designer, to help our customers understand how to pick window treatments for contemporary rooms in Las Vegas.

Contemporary design covers a range of styles that are influenced by the later portion of the 20th century. It’s built on softer, cleaner lines. In Jane’s experience, contemporary means something different to everyone. The majority of the time, her clients want to open the space up. She’s heard people say things like, “I don’t need an ottoman by every chair.” Or “I don’t have to have 15 items on the counter of my house.”

Contemporary rooms “give you the freedom to move.” You can bring the outdoors in - even if you live in a small condo - by opening up your view of the sun, the sky, and the rain in Las Vegas.

Begin by uncluttering the windows. The windows in your grandparents’ house had many layers. There were shades on top of draperies, shutters, valances, and sheers. It’s often claustrophobic. Get rid of the layers. Go for window treatments that use clean lines. And get the contemporary look you’ve always wanted.

Your Options For Contemporary Window Treatments In Las Vegas:

Shutters For Contemporary Spaces

White plantation shutters in a contemporary room

Plantation shutters are perfect for contemporary spaces in Las Vegas. Their wide 4.5” louvers complement a contemporary style. And when you combine these wide louvers with a rear mount tilt rod, your shutters create clean lines across the window.

Shutters give you control over the level of light. The panels can be swung open to the side so that you’ll see through your entire window. Another option is to have divided shutters where the light comes in through the top.

Shutters are also easy to clean, which is handy if the windows are usually dusty. Contemporary décor looks its best when every surface is clean and polished.

Cunningham recommends Polywood shutters to customers interested in window treatments for contemporary rooms. They’re her preferred shutter because won’t warp over time and their colors stay true.

A trend that Cunningham has noticed is that more contemporary rooms feature reclaimed wood shutters. They offer a little bit of nostalgia. They show off the rustic look of hardware. They go well with hardwood flooring to pull in all the elements of the space. Reclaimed wood shutters let you find a new way to incorporate an element from the past. The novel idea of using reclaimed wood as shutters goes right along with the contemporary style.

Modern Barn Doors

Barn doors are a full scale piece of artwork on the wall. Pick as funky of a color as you like. You can go with the restorative look. Or design it to look just like a traditional barn door. And you can give it a contemporary look that matches the hotel you just visited.

Modern barn doors can be used as room separators where you that often don’t have full doors. An example would be when you want to block off your kitchen but not all the time.

Barn doors as window coverings are perfect for large windows with big enough wall space. Shaker doors have an open feel that is reminiscent of a more contemporary style. The hardware you decide on makes a difference. Choose stainless steel for a more contemporary look. Or choose paint in a bold color. If your room had primarily shades of white, a bold red barn door pops against the wall and enhances the space.

“Barn doors add a conversation piece. The next gathering you have, I guarantee someone is going to have a comment. That’s because people aren’t expecting a barn door on a window.” - Jane Cunningham

Cunningham knows from years of experience that our homes are part of who we are as well as an experience we’re sharing with our guests. And a barn door is a portion of that experience. Your guests will definitely be talking about them.

Roller Shades

Roller shades are the perfect solution for contemporary rooms that have large scale windows and doors that be folded into themselves. They’re discretely tucked away and help you bring in the outside view.

If you prefer sleeping with complete room darkness in order to get a restful night’s sleep, roller shades can include room darkening liners. And if you need to dampen noise, pair them with draperies which you can hide from sight by tying on the sides of the windows.

Window Film

Many contemporary rooms in the Las Vegas area feature large windows that are 25-30 feet in height. And when they face west, the sun takes a toll on the furnishings and carpet.

Jane suggests window film to anyone with large windows. It allows you a full view of outside, which is just what you want for a contemporary room.

The film also blocks UV rays. This means your furnishings and carpet hold true to their color longer. Window film also contributes to the energy efficiency of your home.
